Following a disappointing result in the 2026 WNBA playoffs, the Indiana Fever executed a front office purge, with GM Amber Cox being shown the door and president Kelly Krauskopf stepping down.
Head coach Stephanie White kept her job despite fans wanting her to leave in hopes of giving the Caitlin Clark era a good shot next season.
Speaking of the new era, the Fever just announced their first major signing of the offseason, and it has already upset sports analyst Jason Whitlock.
Many expected the Fever to announce the hiring of their next general manager. However, the Fever surprised fans and experts alike by hiring Sheri Sam as the team's new assistant GM.
Keeping that decision in mind, Whitlock ruthlessly called the decision a way to fool Fever fans.
"How do you hire an assistant GM before the actual GM? This is how the DEI PR game is played," Whitlock wrote on X .
He added, "They're announcing this first so they are free to hire who they really want as GM. The matriarchy causes chaos."
Now, this is not a shot at Sam's talents as an executive. If anything, fans are glad to see a 10-year WNBA veteran get the job.
But the aftermath of this decision has rung alarm bells for Whitlock and the fans, as it could be a way to soften the blow when they announce the hiring of their new GM.
At the end of the day, these are still rumours, and the Fever may hire an excellent GM who can build a capable roster around Clark.
