It appears that Atlanta Falcons rookie defensive tackle Anterio Thompson will not be taking the field. Thompson, who was placed on the non-football injury list this summer, revealed on Thursday that he had been sidelined due to a career-ending "genetic mutation" on his spinal cord.

Thompson posted the news on his Instagram story on Thursday, which was his 24th birthday. The tackle wrote that he was told about the mutation on May 8 — just two weeks after the Falcons selected him in the sixth round.

"Blessed to make it to 24. Mentally, I've been better than anyone would be in my situation," Thompson wrote. "I was told I would never play football again due to a genetic mutation in my spinal cord that I had no idea about."

In the post, Thompson wrote that he believes "everything happens for a reason," but was understandably saddened by the situation.

"As a football player you know one day you'll have to hang up your cleats but you just hope it's on your own terms," he wrote. "It's hard to explain what it feels like to go through the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in the [sic] matter of seconds."

Thompson was selected by Atlanta 208th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft out of Washington, where he spent his senior season after stints with Iowa and Western Michigan. On May 14, the Falcons announced that they had agreed to terms with Thompson and fellow rookie Avieon Terrell.

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a "significant" foot injury during Friday's practice session and is expected to be placed on injured reserve, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport .

Shortly after Rapoport's report, the Commanders officially listed Payne as out for Sunday's game versus the Philadelphia Eagles.

Payne will undergo more tests on Saturday, but all signs point to an extended absence for the nine-year veteran. Going on IR would mean Payne will be out for a minimum of four weeks.

In addition to Payne, Washington will also be without defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, who is out for Sunday with a knee injury.

The Commanders have 11 games remaining on their schedule, which means Payne could appear in seven more games if he misses the minimum time. But with Washington holding last place in the NFC East at 1-4-1, the decision might be to keep him out for the remainder of the season if there's any question regarding his health.

Payne could also have been a trade candidate before the Nov. 10 deadline, but the injury obviously negates any possible deal.

Additionally, this likely affects Payne's pending free agency. He's being paid $27.6 million for the 2026-27 season, the final year of the four-year, $90 million contract he signed before the 2023 campaign. His $22.5 million average annual salary ranks 15th at his position, which he would surely like to increase.

The Chicago Bears have acquired three-time All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans, in a trade that was announced Thursday .

As part of the deal, the Bears are also receiving a 2028 fifth-round draft pick and are sending Tennessee first-round picks in 2027 and 2028, plus a 2027 fourth-round pick.

"There are few people like Jeff Simmons. We are forever grateful for all he has given this team and this city," Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. "His formidable presence on the field was surpassed only by what he did off it. He gave Nashville more than football. The Give 'Em A Reason Foundation has changed lives in Middle Tennessee and in Mississippi, and I have no doubt it will continue to wherever he goes. Jeff — thank you. For how you played, how you led, and how you represented our team."

Simmons, 29, is joining a Bears defense that has allowed the eighth-fewest total yards (313.4 per game), third-fewest rushing yards (87.6) and ninth-fewest points (20.4), plus has recorded the fifth-most sacks (18) through seven weeks.

Through seven games this season, Simmons has four sacks, 38 total tackles and one forced fumble.
